About the Work
Set in a brothel in northern Argentina, Venecia It unfolds a vibrant, marginalized world where mischief and humor intertwine with profound humanity. Tender, funny, and deeply moving, the play invites the audience to reflect on hope, solidarity, desire, and the enduring dignity of the human spirit.
At the heart of the story is The Gringa, an elderly, blind madam who dreams of traveling to Venecia to reunite with the love of her life and finally free herself from a guilt that haunts her. When the journey proves impossible, the other characters create a moving theatrical illusion—a play within a play—to make her dream come true.
In the words of its author, Jorge Accame, these tender and endearing characters are guided "towards the only possible epiphany, towards the only light that is allowed to them: that of their dreams." Venecia It is a moving tribute to shared hope, to friendship that invents new paths, and to a love that seeks redemption before the end.
It is also a moving reflection on the unique power of theatre to transform reality, even if only for a moment. Widely acclaimed, Venecia It has been translated into multiple languages and performed in Europe and throughout the Americas. It is among the most celebrated contemporary Argentine works, having received prestigious awards such as the ACE Awards, the Trinidad Guevara Award, the Estrella de Mar Award, and the Florencio Sánchez Award.
Theater People previously presented Venecia at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston (2003) and at Rice University (2004).
Venecia Jorge Accame's work is represented in the United States through the F&F Literary Agency (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
