“Gente de Teatro: A passionate theatrical journey”

Gente de Teatro (GdT) was founded in 1995 after participating in the production of Primavera con una esquina rota by Mario Benedetti, directed by Ricardo Yamal at Rice University. Its founding members — Esteban Gago, Marcela Salas, and Claudia Soroka — recognized the need to create a theater company dedicated to presenting works by Latin American authors in Spanish, the original language in which they were written.

In 2011, with its production of Made in Argentina (Made in Lanús) by Nelly
Fernández Tiscornia, GdT became the first theater company to present a
play in Spanish at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
In 2016, GdT presented Lombrices, by Pablo Albarello, at MACHA (West Hollywood,
California).

In 2017, 2018 & 2019, GdT was nominated in the “Most Improved Theater Company” category at the Broadway World Houston Region Awards. In 2018, GdT received the Bridge Award at Stages Theatre's Sin Muros Theater Festival in recognition of its career and for creating bridges of connection within Houston's artistic community.

In 2021, GdT expanded its mission to include plays by renowned international authors.
GdT was nominated for the Broadway World Houston Region Awards in the category “Best New Play” with the play Madenusa by C. Soroka (2019) and in “Best New Play” and “Best Ensemble Performance” with Toc Toc by Laurent Baffie and Spanish version by Julián Quintanilla (2022).

In 2022, GdT received recognition from the Spanish Consulate in Houston for its work and support for the Iberian October program as part of the commemoration of Spain's National Holiday. Gente de Teatro is part of the cultural agenda of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Cultural Affairs Office.

GdT has presented 39 plays since its founding. With the exception of the 30 months interrupted by the pandemic, GdT has been the only theater organization in Houston to present plays in Spanish continuoslty since 1995, most of them at Rice University and at MATCH. GdT has built a loyal audience, largely bilingual that continues to grow each year.
